Our Story

Gateway English Assessments was founded in January 2025 in the United States, built on a simple observation: the English language testing world wasn't built for young learners.

Most recognized English exams were designed for adults, for university entry, for high-stakes moments late in a student's academic life. But the students filling classrooms at English Language Schools around the world are often eight, nine, ten years old — just beginning their journey with the language. They deserved an assessment built specifically for them: modern, encouraging, and genuinely aligned with how children learn — not a scaled-down version of a test meant for someone twice their age.

So we built one. Gateway English Assessments was created to close that gap, with exams that are technologically forward, affordable, and closely aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), so that schools of any size can offer their students an independent, internationally recognized measure of progress.

Our Mission

We believe every young learner deserves to see how far they've come, not just how far they have to go. Learning a new language takes years, and staying motivated throughout depends on recognizing progress along the way.

Our mission is to make high-quality, standards-aligned English assessment accessible to English Language Schools everywhere, regardless of size or budget. We design exams that recognize progress at every stage, build confidence alongside competence, and give schools an independent, credible measure they can put in front of the families they serve.

What We Believe

Modern, not recycled. Our exams are built from the ground up for online delivery — not paper tests converted into PDFs. Students take a fully digital assessment, at their own school, on a schedule that works for their teachers and families.

Built for young learners, not borrowed from adult exams. Every level, task, and rubric is designed around what's developmentally realistic for a specific age group: from a child's very first encounters with English to the fluency needed to begin preparing for exams like IGCSE, TOEFL, or IELTS.

Affordable, by design. Quality assessment shouldn't be reserved for the schools that can afford a handful of premium global providers. We built our pricing and delivery model so that independent schools and larger networks alike can offer their students an internationally benchmarked result.

Aligned with the CEFR, at every level. Our seven-level framework — Sprouts, Seedlings, Blossoms, Adventurers, Navigators, Pioneers, and Fluent Flyers — maps a learner's progress from below A1 through A1, A2, and B1, up to B1+, approaching B2. Each level tests four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
